Following London's selection by the IOC to host the 2012 Summer Olympics, New York mayor Mike Bloomberg and NYC2012 founder Dan Doctoroff both indicated their bid was a one-time situation. But observers say the city should toss its hat into the ring for 2016.
Offered Bob Basche, chairman at sports marketing firm Millsport, Stamford, Conn., "In the Olympic cycle, there are a lot of positive elements now in play for New York."
Although a timeline for 2016 has not yet been set, the IOC likely will begin to collect bid nominations in 2006. Among those cities in the planning stages for such a bid include Delhi, India; Hamburg, Germany; either Milan or Rome, Italy; and U.S. locations like San Diego, Minneapolis/St. Paul and possibly Los Angeles and San Francisco.
